WHAT IS AFFORDABLE CARE ACT?
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, signed into law in March, 2010, represents a significant overhaul of the country’s healthcare system. Its goals are to increase the quality and affordability of health insurance, lower the uninsured rate by expanding public and private insurance coverage, and reduce the costs of health care for individuals and the government.
Essential health benefits
The law mandates that most Americans have health insurance by January 1, 2014 or face a fine. The law also requires all insurance plans to provide “essential health benefits” including preventative and wellness services, hospitalization, emergency care, maternity services, pediatric care and prescriptions.
In this state, Covered California has been established as the health insurance marketplace where consumers can shop for the insurance option that best fits their health needs and budget. Local Health Line works with Covered California and does community outreach to help consumers understand their options and facilitate their acquiring health insurance.
Subsidies available to lower costs
To make health insurance more affordable, subsidies are available for individuals and families that meet certain income requirements and do not have access to coverage through an employer or government program. In order to qualify for financial assistance coverage must be purchased through Covered California.
